Improving the livelihoods of the working class is a fundamental requirement for the progress of the nation, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair said on Friday.
Speaking at an International Workers' Day rally at the Bhogra Bypass in Gazipur, Zubair highlighted the personal risks labourers take to perform their duties and called for the creation of a more equitable society. The event was hosted by the Gazipur Metropolitan unit of the Bangladesh Workers' Welfare Federation.
"The working class performs their duties at the risk of their lives. We aim to build a just society for them," Zubair told the gathering. He pointed out that while the national parliament includes reserved seats for women, there is currently no specific legislative representation for the labour force.
As Gazipur serves as a major industrial hub with a high concentration of workers, Zubair urged for more localized initiatives to enhance the quality of life for those employed in the city's factories and businesses.
He stressed that national advancement is impossible without ensuring the welfare of labourers and encouraged a spirit of cooperation between employees and employers.
The rally was chaired by Muhammad Hossain Ali, president of the Federation’s Gazipur city unit, and moderated by General Secretary Hasibul Hasan.
Other prominent speakers included Salahuddin Ayubi, Member of Parliament for Gazipur-4, and Metropolitan Jamaat Ameer Professor Muhammad Jamal Uddin. Central Vice President of the Workers' Welfare Federation Kabir Ahmed also attended as a special guest alongside several senior local leaders.
