Salauddin Tuku  opens excavation of Dhaleshwari, Lauhajang rivers

TANGAIL, May 2: The inauguration of a mega project to restore the navigability of the Dhaleshwari and Lauhajang rivers in Tangail and to protect the riverside settlements of Tangail municipal area has taken place. 

On Saturday, the excavation work was inaugurated at the Khudirampur area of Kortia in the Sadar Upazila by the Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Alhaj Sultan Salauddin Tuku, MP.

In his inaugural speech, the chief guest, Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, said that before the ink from the finger had dried after voting, the BNP government had started fulfilling its promises. 

As a continuation of that, the project entitled 'Excavation of the Dhaleshwari and Lauhajang rivers in Tangail District and riverbank protection in Tangail municipal area' was inaugurated under the supervision of the Water Development Board (WDB).

He said that if the river survives, Tangail survives. Through this project, on one hand, fishery resources will be developed, and on the other hand, Tangail municipality will be protected from erosion and floods. The present government is determined to protect water bodies and rivers.

The deputy minister said that excavating the Dhaleshwari and Lauhajang rivers, which have long been filled with silt and have suffered from encroachment and pollution, will normalise water flow in the region and bring about a radical change in agriculture and the environment. 

Presided over by the Executive Engineer of the Tangail WDB Md. Main Uddin, the event was attended as special guests by the Superintendent of Police of Tangail Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar and Additional District Commissioner (Overall) Sanjay Kumar Mohanta and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahin Mia. 

Among others, speeches were given at the event by the President of the District BNP Hasanuzzamil Shahin, former member secretary Mahmudul Haq Sanu, former president of District Juba Dal and Chatra Dal, Khondkar Ahmedul Haq Satil, and President of Sadar Upazila BNP Azgar Ali.

Senior officials of the district administration and the WDB, party leaders and activists, and local dignitaries were present at the event.
