Re-excavation program of two canals was inaugurated in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila on Sunday under the Employment Generation Programme for the Poorest (EGPP), aimed at implementing the Prime Minister’s commitment.
The canals, “Banka Khal” and “Kuchkhali Khal”, are being re-excavated in the Sowail Shantir Bazar area of the upazila.
Member of Parliament from Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka) constituency, Fakhr Uddin Ahmed Bachchu, inaugurated the work at a programme held in the afternoon.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Firoz Hossain presided over the inaugural event.
Speaking at the programme, local officials said the project is being implemented with a cost of Tk 1.51 crore under the Department of Disaster Management.
Around six kilometres of canals will be re-excavated under the project, which is expected to improve the drainage system in the areas and create employment opportunities for ultra-poor people.
Among others, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Iqbal Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer Nusrat Jaman, acting chairman of Mallikbari union Manjurul Haque Pathan and Upazila Zia Parishad general secretary lecturer Anwar Hossain spoke at the event.
Local administrative officials and leaders of BNP and its associate bodies were present, among others.
