KHULNA, May 8: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman on Friday said there is no alternative to training for enhancing the professional skills of lawyers.

"To this end, training programmes will soon be arranged in all district bar associations across the country with the assistance of a British organisation," he said.

The minister said competent and skilled lawyers must be developed first in order to produce competent judges.

He made the remarks while addressing a reception and orientation programme for newly enrolled lawyers as the chief guest at the auditorium of Khulna District Bar Association in the morning.

Addressing the young lawyers, he said ensuring an independent judiciary free from influence would help establish justice in the country.

He also said the judiciary must be transformed into an institution of dignity like a place of pilgrimage in order to further strengthen democracy, rule of law and human rights in Bangladesh.

The minister urged lawyers to uphold honesty, dedication and professional competence and to refrain from all forms of unethical activities.

Among others, KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju, Member of Parliament Amir Ejaz Khan, Advocate Jahangir Hossain Helal, Senior District and Sessions Judge Chand Mohammad Abdul Aleem Al Razi and Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat spoke at the function as special guests.

President of the District Bar Association Advocate Molla Mohammad Masum Rashid presided over the programme while General Secretary Advocate Molla Mashiur Rahman Nannu conducted it.

Earlier, the minister addressed an introductory meeting with judicial officials in the conference room of the Khulna District Judge Court as the chief guest.
