Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam announced on Monday that the government is moving forward with plans to construct the "Second Padma Bridge" at the Daulatdia-Paturia point to enhance connectivity and reduce road accidents.
The Minister shared the update following a preparatory meeting at the Secretariat focused on ensuring safe travel for citizens during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.
He confirmed that the feasibility study for the mega-project has already been completed.
"We are proceeding with the construction of the Second Padma Bridge," Minister Alam stated. "While there were three site proposals, the Daulatdia-Paturia route remains the primary choice. We are currently in discussions regarding financing and are moving ahead with preliminary preparations."
Addressing the logistical challenges of the festive season, the Minister noted that managing the travel of over 15 million people and the transport of nearly 10 million sacrificial animals is an immense task.
He emphasized that coordinated efforts between all agencies are essential to minimize suffering and prevent accidents.
To improve maritime safety following recent incidents at Aricha Ghat, the Minister announced new safety protocols. Barricades will now be used on ferries to prevent vehicles from boarding until the vessel is completely cleared.
Additionally, new disciplinary measures have been introduced at Sadarghat, including the construction of a connecting bridge to ensure speedboast passengers use designated pontoons instead of boarding launches directly.
The Second Padma Bridge is expected to significantly ease the traffic burden on existing routes and provide a vital link between the capital and the southwestern districts, further strengthening the country’s infrastructure.
