JUCSU announces 5-point demand over attempted rape case

Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) has placed a five-point demand and warned of a blockade on the Dhaka-Aricha highway if the accused in an alleged attempted rape case involving a female student is not arrested promptly by law enforcement agencies.

The warning came from a press briefing held in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) residence on Saturday afternoon.

The demands include the immediate arrest of the accused, accountability of the university registrar, security office and proctorial body, an end to what they described as misleading propaganda surrounding the incident and stricter action against the administration if their demands are not met. JUCSU also reiterated its warning of a Dhaka-Aricha highway blockade if arrests are delayed.

JUCSU VP Abdur Rashid Zitu said Executive Member Mohammad Ali Chishti and other students rescued the victim shortly after the incident on the night of May 12 and took her to the university medical centre for treatment.

He alleged that administrative delays and lack of coordination in reviewing CCTV footage hampered the investigation process.

Zitu further claimed that the circulation of unverified AI-generated images created confusion over identifying the suspect.

Following the press briefing, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said the university administration had contacted senior government officials over the matter.

“They have assured us that the accused will be brought under the law within a short time. We are continuously urging law enforcement agencies to take swift action,” he added.

JUCSU leaders said they would intensify their movement if the demands are not met.
