A motorcycle that a teenager had long dreamed of owning ultimately became the cause of his tragic death when he was killed in a road crash in Mymensingh's Ishwarganj upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Aftab Shahriar Mahir, 20, son of Abdul Kaiyum of Musalli village under Nandail upazila. The family resided in Dattapara area of Ishwarganj municipality. Mahir was a first-year student of the Political Science Department at Ishwarganj Government College.
The incident occurred around 11:30 AM at Char Hosenpur on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway when Mahir's motorcycle collided head-on with a microbus coming from the opposite direction.
According to eyewitnesses, Mahir was riding towards Harua when the crash took place. The impact left the motorcycle mangled and threw him onto the roadside.
Larer, Fire Service personnel rescued him and took him to Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Family members said Mahir had persistently asked his father to buy him a motorcycle after many of his friends acquired one. Despite concerns about road safety, his father eventually agreed after repeated requests.
According to relatives, Abdul Kaiyum purchased the motorcycle about four months ago at a cost of Tk 2.75 lakh.
Speaking beside his son's body at the hospital, Abdul Kaiyum said, “I bought the motorcycle to fulfill my son's wish. Today, that very wish has taken away my only son forever.”
Ishwarganj Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Rashed Mosharraf confirmed the incident and said necessary legal procedures were underway.
