US launches fresh attack on Iran

The United States launched fresh strikes on Iran after US President Donald Trump accused the country of “shooting down a US helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.”

The US military forces began strikes at 17:00 EST (22:00 BST) on Tuesday in response to the helicopter downing, US Central Command (Centcom) said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary ⁠Guard Corps (IRGC) said it attacked the US Fifth ⁠Fleet in Bahrain with ⁠drones in response to US strikes on southern ‌Iran earlier, state media report.

The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said it carried out “self-defence strikes” against Iran in response to what it said was the downing by Iranian forces of a US attack helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
