The National Citizen Party (NCP) Chattogram Metropolitan unit has strongly condemned remarks made by Cumilla 6 lawmaker Monirul Haque Chowdhury regarding the attire of female members of parliament and demanded an unconditional public apology.
In a statement issued on Sunday night, the party said the National Parliament is the highest law making institution of the state and that ridiculing or humiliating any female public representative over her attire, religious practices or personal identity undermines not only the dignity of the individuals concerned but also the honour of women across the country.
The statement, signed by Acting Office Secretary and Publicity and Publication Secretary Riduan Hridoy, said differences of opinion are a normal part of parliamentary democracy, but making personal attire or religious beliefs a subject of ridicule is unacceptable.
“Such comments are inconsistent with parliamentary culture and the respect that should be accorded to women,” the statement said.
