BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has called on the professional community to play a more active and united role in ensuring democratic values, good governance and sustainable development in the country.
He said engineers can make a stronger contribution to national development and state-building through their skills, honesty and patriotism.
Rizvi made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with leaders of the Association of Engineers, Bangladesh at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday.
The delegation was led by its Member Secretary, Engineer Shoaib Bashri Hablu. During the meeting, the two sides discussed the country's current political situation, the professional interests of engineers, the development of the engineering sector, leadership development for young engineers and the role of engineers in nation-building.
They also exchanged views on increasing the participation of nationalist-minded engineers in the activities of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).
Speaking at the meeting, Rizvi said engineers have played an important role in the country's infrastructure development, national progress and state-building. He stressed the need for greater unity among professionals to help strengthen democracy and ensure sustainable development.
He said the skills, integrity and patriotism of engineers are important driving forces for national development and should be used more effectively for the welfare of the country.
Member Secretary Engineer Shoaib Bashri Hablu highlighted the organisation's ongoing activities. He said AB engineers played an active role at both organisational and professional levels in different constituencies during the 13th National Parliament election.
He also said that AB has formed separate committees for 12 important national sectors after the election. These committees include experienced engineers, experts and professionals who are already working in their respective fields.
Leaders emphasized the need for efficient, accountable and nationally committed leadership in key government sectors, including power, energy, LGED, water resources and infrastructure development.
They said qualified, talented, experienced and patriotic engineers should be appointed to leadership and other important positions in government agencies, departments and institutions to strengthen national development, good governance and institutional capacity.
The leaders also stressed the importance of increasing the participation of professional engineers at different levels of state administration and making better use of their experience in national development activities.
