PABNA, June 27: A young man was shot dead in a clash between two groups over illegal sand lifting from the Padma River in Pabna Sadar Upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased Manju Sheik, 35, was the son of Darog Sheik of the Aria Gohailbari area of the upazila and the nephew of Sujanagar Upazila BNP Member Secretary Sheik Abdur Rouf and Chartarapur Union BNP former president Sheik Rahmat Ali.
They claim that the deceased was a BNP activist.
According to local sources, following a dispute between two groups over sand lifting from the Padma char in the Jotkakuria Kalabagan area of Chartarapur Union, people locked in a clash on Friday morning and Manju Sheikh died on the spot after being shot.
Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Rezinur Rahman confirmed the matter and said that the body would be sent to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police are working to reveal the cause of the murder.
