Two police personnel from Fatullah Model Police Station in Narayanganj have been suspended from service following allegations of stealing gold jewellery while conducting a raid in Jamtala area of the city.
The suspended are Sub-Inspector (SI) Khairul Bashar and Constable Afikul Islam.
Police sources said the incident took place on July 2, 2026, in Dhopapatti area of Jamtala. The duo, accompanied by two civilian informants, allegedly carried out a raid on a house claiming they were searching for narcotics. During the operation, they were accused of stealing gold jewellery from a drawer inside the house.
Following the incident, members of the resident resisted the group and asked them to show their identification cards. They failed to identify themselves, leading to altercation with local residents.
Later, all the four were reportedly assaulted by an angry crowd before police arrived at the scene and took them into their custody.
A case was filed with Fatullah Model Police Station by one Suma Akter. Following the filing of the case, police arrested SI Khairul Bashar, Constable Afikul Islam and the two civilian informants, Miraj Islam Shuvo and Rana.
Later, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi issued an official order suspending SI Khairul Bashar and Constable Afikul Islam from their duties.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the officers, who were in plain clothes during the operation, failed to prove their identities. They also claimed that Constable Afikul Islam took a gold chain from a drawer and put it into his pocket. When the alleged theft became known, a confrontation broke out between the group and local residents before police intervened.
The incident has sparked concern in the area. Police said an investigation is underway and that legal action is being taken against those found responsible.
