Three children, including two sisters, drowned while bathing in a pond at Bagharpara upazila of Jashore on Friday.
The incident took place around noon at Jamdia village.
The deceased were Sultana, 11, and Lamia, 13 -- daughters of Nesar Ali-- and Fahima, 10, daughter of Ashikul Islam. All three were the residents of Jamdia village.
Their neighbour Mahbur Rahman said the children went to bathe in a pond owned by Ikram Molla near their homes at around 11:30AM. When they could not be found, their grandmother went to the pond with several others and found the children floating beneath the pond's steps.
They were quickly rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Mahbur said the pond is rarely used by local residents, and those who bathe there usually leave shortly after finishing.
Masnun Abdullah, a physician at Bagharpara Upazila Health Complex, said the three children were brought to the hospital at around 12:50PM. They had no heartbeat, and doctors declared them dead after examination.
Bagharpara Police Station Officer in-Charge Shah Jalal Alam confirmed the incident, saying police were sent to the scene after receiving reports of the three drownings. An investigation is underway.
