CNG auto rickshaw drivers block road in Chattogram over gas shortage

CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers blocked a road in Chattogram city on Friday morning, protesting the acute shortage of gas at filling stations.
The drivers took position on the road in the Sholashahar area from the early hours of Friday (August 14), bringing traffic between Muradpur and the No. 2 Gate area to a halt.
The drivers said they had been waiting for hours in long queues outside filling stations but were still unable to get gas. They also alleged that station authorities could not provide any definite information about when gas supplies would return to normal.
They said the gas shortage had not only halted their income but was also causing severe inconvenience to passengers. The number of CNG-run auto-rickshaws on city roads has declined as similar shortages have been reported at several filling stations.
Manu Miaji, one of the drivers taking part in the blockade, said he had been unable to operate his vehicle for two days. “I have no income, but I still have to pay the daily rental and meet my household expenses. If we have to stand in line for hours and still cannot get gas, how are we supposed to survive?” he said.
An official of Fossil Filling Station in Sholashahar said CNG could not be supplied because of the lack of gas. “There is nothing we can do until the supply returns to normal,” he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Panchlaish Police Station Md Zahedul Islam said police teams were at the scene and were working to bring the situation under control.
