Workers of a Chinese-owned company blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Nabagram in Shibalaya upazila on Wednesday morning, demanding wages in line with the government gazette and the removal of a company official.
The blockade caused long tailbacks on both sides of the highway, leaving commuters and transport workers stranded.
The protesters alleged they had long been deprived of government-approved wages and other benefits, forcing them to take to the streets.
Shibalaya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Aminul Islam said police were deployed at the scene and efforts were underway to restore normal traffic.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Shibalaya Circle) Sadia Sabrina Chowdhury said authorities were holding talks with the workers and expected traffic movement to return to normal shortly.
