A Bangladeshi migrant working as a food delivery driver has been fatally shot in the US state of Pennsylvania, rattling the Bangladeshi diaspora living in the area.
The deceased is 43-year-old Md Mahfuzul Haque, originally from Rajshahi.
Police said the victim was shot in the back of the head and killed in Philadelphia’s Kingsessing neighbourhood on Tuesday night (local time).
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at the 1000 block of South Ithan Street around 9:30pm where they found the man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Mahfuzul was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10 pm.
Mahbubul Alam Tayyab, the Bangladeshi American mayor of Millbourne Borough, said Mahfuzul lived with his wife and a 14-year-old child in the area.
Bangladeshi expatriates suspect it was a “premeditated murder”.
There was no report of any arrests when this report was dispatched.
Officer Small said a car and a DoorDash food delivery bag were also found at the scene.
Two spent rifle round shell casings were found within inches of Mahfuzul, indicating that he was shot at close range, Small added.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and involved three masked men.
The suspects wore dark clothing, but images were not immediately available to the public, said Small.
Philadelphia Police requested anyone with any information on the murder contact them at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or
[email protected].
Police said DoorDash officials were in touch with them.
Some of Mahfuz’s close relatives and friends live in Canada, where his body will be sent after funeral prayers in Philadelphia.
He will be buried in Canada, said his family members. " bdnews24
