Water levels in the Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra rivers are rising in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram following rainfall and upstream inflows, raising concerns regarding fresh flooding.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in the Indian states adjacent to Bangladesh on Friday and Saturday.
The agency said the Dudhkumar River in the Rangpur is rising and may reach the warning level. Low-lying areas along the rivers may experience temporary flooding.
Local residents said signs of the recent flood have not yet disappeared. They fear another flood could submerge roads, houses and low-lying areas if the water continues to rise.
They also expressed concern that prolonged flooding could damage transplanted Aman seedbeds, although the previous flood receded quickly and caused limited losses.
According to a reading released by the Bangladesh Water Development Board on Friday, the Dudhkumar River was flowing 0.88 centimetres below the danger level at the Pateshwari point, while the Brahmaputra River was flowing 1.85 centimetres below the danger level at the Nunkhawa point.
Executive Engineer of the Kurigram Water Development Board Rakibul Hasan said the situation is being monitored round the clock. He said immediate action would be taken if any problem arises.
