Four fishermen have been confirmed dead and one remains missing after a fishing trawler carrying 12 fishermen capsized in the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal near Kutubdia Island in Cox’s Bazar early Monday.
According to local sources, the fishing trawler, FB Fakira Masjid, owned by Nurul Abchar, left Amjakhali Ghat in the Boro Ghop Union of Kutubdia on Sunday morning with 12 fishermen on board for a fishing expedition in the deep sea.
At around 4:00 a.m. on Monday, the trawler was struck by strong waves amid adverse weather conditions and sank. Seven fishermen managed to survive by boarding a nearby fishing trawler, while the remaining five went missing.
Later on Monday evening, the sunken trawler was recovered, and the bodies of four fishermen were found inside. The deceased were identified as Md. Sagar, Md. Karim, Md. Ayub Monir, all from Amjakhali in Boro Ghop Union, and Kamal Hossain of Haiderpara in Ali Akbar Deil Union of Kutubdia.
One fisherman, Nasir Uddin, a resident of Magnama Union in Pekua Upazila of Cox’s Bazar, remains missing.
Abul Kalam Azad, President of the Kutubdia Upazila Fisheries Federation, said seven fishermen survived by climbing onto a nearby trawler. Of them, three have already returned to Kutubdia, while the remaining four are assisting in the ongoing search for the missing fisherman.
Confirming the incident, Md. Faruk Hossain, Investigation Officer of Kutubdia Police Station, said legal procedures are underway. He added that rescue efforts are continuing, but the missing fisherman had not been found at the time of filing this report.
