At least 16 shops were gutted in a fire at Shantirhat Bazaar in Dantmara Union of Fatikchhari upazila, Chattogram, on Thursday.
The fire broke out around noon, according to local sources. Traders estimated the damage at around Tk15 lakh.
The fire reportedly started at a bakery run by Md Shahidullah in a rented shop owned by Akkas and Delwar Hossain. It is suspected that a gas stove or gas connection at the bakery triggered the fire, which quickly spread to neighbouring shops.
Local traders and residents initially tried to contain the blaze before a unit of Fatikchhari Fire Service arrived and brought it under control.
Sixteen shops were completely burnt, along with their goods, furniture and business equipment.
Firefighter Ujjwal Mia of Fatikchhari Fire Service Station said the fire was believed to have originated from a gas cylinder at the bakery. The blaze was brought under control with the help of firefighters and local residents.
