
Two men accused of posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers and extorting money from a resident were arrested by locals and later handed over to police in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi.
The incident took place in Piyadapara area of Arani municipality on Thursday afternoon.
According to local sources, the two suspects, identified as Hasibul Hasan and Md Sohel Rana, allegedly visited the house of a local resident on Wednesday, identified as Sohel Rana, posing as DB police. They allegedly threatened him and took Tk 60,000 and a mobile phone.
Police said the suspects returned to the same house on Thursday evening and allegedly demanded more money. Suspicious locals detained the pair and assaulted them before police arrived, rescued them and took them into custody.
The arrested Hasibul Hasan, 25, is the son of Anwar Hossain of Bagatipara upazila in Natore district and is a dismissed army member, police said. The other accused, Md Sohel Rana, 28, is the son of Abdul Hakim from the same upazila.
Bagha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Serajul Haque said the two suspects remain in police custody and legal proceedings are underway.
