Experts Call for Front-of-Pack Labelling Policy to Protect Consumer Health

Workshop highlights media's role in achieving SDG 3.4 thru FOPL

Public health experts, legal professionals and media representatives have called for the prompt formulation and implementation of a Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) policy in Bangladesh to protect public health, safeguard consumers' rights, prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and promote healthier food choices.

The call came at a Media Advocacy Workshop on Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) in Bangladesh, organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) at the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro in the capital on Tuesday.

Iqbal Masud, Director of the Health and Nutrition Sector at Dhaka Ahsania Mission, said nutrition information on packaged foods is often difficult for consumers to understand, leading many to unknowingly consume products high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. He said clear front-of-pack warning labels would help consumers make informed choices and improve public health.

Muhammad Ruhul Quddus, Bangladesh Country Lead of the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), highlighted global progress in Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) and outlined Bangladesh's advocacy campaign. He said the country should adopt an effective FOPL policy to protect public health, following the example of many other nations.

Barrister Md Mahfuzur Rahman Milon, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, said access to clear and accurate food information is a fundamental consumer right and that an effective FOPL system would strengthen consumer protection and promote a safer food environment.

Dr Ahmad Khairul Abrar of the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute said international evidence shows that Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) encourages healthier food choices and prompts manufacturers to improve product formulations, helping reduce the long-term burden of non-communicable diseases.

Abu Rushd Md Ruhul Amin, Senior News Editor at BanglaVision, said the media can play a key role in raising public awareness about Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) and supporting evidence-based policymaking through responsible and sustained reporting.

The workshop brought together journalists from print, television and online media, along with public health experts, legal professionals, youth representatives and members of civil society.

Mahbuba Rahman, Project Coordinator of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, said the draft Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) Regulations are under review by the Ministry of Food. She urged coordinated, evidence-based media advocacy to build public support and expedite the policy's adoption.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants reaffirmed their commitment to working together to build public support for the implementation of Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) in Bangladesh.
