Hasnat warns of fresh street protests over worsening law and order

Member of the Parliament and NCP southern region chief organizer Hasnat Abdullah warned that people will take to streets again if law and order situation deteriorates.

He said merely changing the government or the "driver" is not enough. Structural reform of the state is essential.

Comparing state reforms to changing a bus's brakes and wheels, he said the majority of the people support such changes.

He alleged that the government has backtracked on its post-election reform promises. Referring to allegations of vote rigging in past elections, he claimed that public opinion has been ignored this time as well.

Hasnat Abdullah made these remarks on Tuesday (July 14) afternoon. He was addressing a 'July March' rally in front of Nimtala Shikdar Market in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order, he said the current situation is worse than during the interim government. He cited attacks on police stations and the snatching of accused suspects as examples of government failure.

Regarding employment, the MP said jobs have not been created as promised during the election. Instead of creating jobs, drugs and gambling are spreading across the country, he alleged. He warned that people would launch another movement if law and order is not restored.

Criticizing the Awami League, he said the party’s top leadership is not sincere about protecting public interest. He also alleged land grabbing in Sirajdikhan. He claimed many lands grabbed by Awami League associates changed hands after August 5, but local representatives failed to take effective action.
