A pall of grief has descended on the family of state medal-winning firefighter and diver Sadik Hossain Shuvo, whose body was recovered from the Shitalakkhya River in Narayanganj after an eight-hour search operation.

Sadik, 26, hailed from Kumrakandi village in Ward No. 4 of Goalanda Municipality in Rajbari. He was a trained diver with the Narayanganj River Fire Station and had received the Fire Service State Medal in recognition of his outstanding service.

His family home was crowded with relatives, neighbours and well-wishers on Friday as mourners gathered to pay their respects.

His mother, overcome with grief, said her son had called his father on Thursday morning asking for Tk 5,000 and had told the family a few days earlier that he planned to visit home next week. She demanded a proper investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Sadik went missing around 11:00am on Thursday while clearing water hyacinths near the fire station jetty in the Shitalakkhya River. Fire Service divers, along with teams from the Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and BIWTA, launched a rescue operation. His body was recovered about eight hours later from the Kerosene Ghat area in Nitaiganj.

Former Goalanda municipal councillor Fazlul Haque, Sadik's uncle, said he was working with three colleagues when he reportedly lost control due to waves created by a passing speedboat and fell into the river.

He questioned the circumstances of the incident, saying it was difficult to believe that an experienced, state-recognised diver would drown during a routine operation. He urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the actual cause of death.

Besides his service as a firefighter, Sadik was also a well-known football goalkeeper in Goalanda and had represented several local teams.

After funeral prayers at the Fire Service headquarters in Dhaka following Friday prayers, his body was taken to his hometown, where he was laid to rest at the local graveyard.
