The decomposed body of an unidentified person was found in a keora (mangrove) forest in Nijhum Dwip of Hatiya upazila after apparently being carried ashore by the tidal current, officials and locals said.
The body was spotted on Thursday in the mangrove forest near Hasi Market in Ward No. 9 of Nijhum Dwip Union.
According to local residents, the body drifted in with the high tide and became lodged in the mangrove trees. As it had remained in the water for an extended period, the body was in a decomposed state, making identification impossible.
Locals informed the police after discovering the body. However, they alleged that the body remained at the site until night due to a lack of coordination between the local police and the river police over jurisdiction.
Officer-in-Charge of the Nijhum Dwip River Police Outpost Ashikur Rahman said they had only recently been informed of the incident and would take the necessary steps after verifying the situation.
Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Kabir Hossain said police visited the scene after receiving the information. However, as the location is close to the river, it falls under the jurisdiction of the river police.
He added that the body could not be recovered on Thursday because the mangrove forest is located about one kilometre from the nearest road and remained inundated by tidal water. Authorities expect to recover the body on Friday morning.
Police said efforts are underway to identify the deceased and determine the cause of death after the body is recovered.
