Four consecutive days of heavy rainfall from July 9 to 12 caused an estimated Tk 11 crore in losses to the fisheries and agriculture sectors across Khulna district, according to preliminary assessments by the Department of Agricultural Extension and the District Fisheries Office.
The torrential rain inundated hundreds of fish enclosures, ponds and croplands, leaving fish farmers and growers facing significant financial losses.
District Fisheries Officer Md Badruzzaman said eight unions in nine upazilas of the district were affected by the prolonged rainfall, with Dighalia recording the highest damage, where four unions were hit.
A total of 1,462 ponds, dighis and fish enclosures (ghers) were damaged during the four-day spell, he said.
According to the fisheries department's preliminary estimate, the sector alone suffered losses of around Tk 10.75 crore, of which about 60 per cent was incurred by shrimp farmers.
Dumuria, the main shrimp farming hub of the Khulna region, experienced the worst impact. Around 650 fish enclosures were affected there, causing an estimated Tk 8.6 crore in losses.
Of the total losses in Dumuria, white fish farmers incurred damages worth approximately Tk 4.1 crore, while shrimp farmers suffered losses estimated at Tk 4.5 crore.
