Former state minister Siddiqulla Chowdhury has called on Muslims to take to the streets on Friday to protest against the ban on prayers at the 136-year-old Gauripur Jama Masjid, located adjacent to the second runway of Kolkata Airport. The decision has sparked widespread discussion and criticism in the political arena of West Bengal.

Section 163 was imposed on the airport premises to control the situation on Friday morning.

In addition to additional police, the central forces are controlling the situation. Water cannons have been deployed. There is tension in Virati and Bankra areas regarding the entire situation. Since Friday (July 17) morning, the Bidhannagar Commissioner's police have been using a microphone to say that no more than four people can gather at a time. If more than this is gathered, action will be taken as per the administration law.

The area around the entrance to the mosque has been cordoned off by the police and central forces. The police are not allowing anyone who is not wanted to gather.

The 136-year-old Gouripur Jama Masjid, known as the 'Bankara Masjid', is located within the airport. Authorities are claiming that the mosque poses a risk to aircraft take-off and landing.
