Education system deliberately destroyed over past 17 years: State Minister

State Minister for Social Welfare Barrister Farzana Sharmin has alleged that the country’s education system was deliberately weakened over the past 17 years, saying the present government has started working to create a healthy educational environment and ensure the physical and mental development of students.
She made the remarks on Saturday while addressing a teachers-and-students gathering as the chief guest at Bilayet Khan High School in Lalpur, Natore. Headmaster Moazzem Hossain presided over the programme.
Sharmin alleged that students had been deliberately kept away from proper education during the previous 17 years, leaving many vulnerable to online gambling and drug abuse amid frustration and declining mental resilience.
“The fascist regime deprived students of genuine education,” she said, adding that proper education would enable students to speak up, stand firmly and protest against injustice.
The state minister also criticised what she described as excessive academic pressure on students, saying they had been turned into “warriors” in a race for GPA-5 results. She claimed that some students were unable to cope with the pressure and died by suicide.
“We do not want such an education system. We want students to learn in a joyful environment,” she said.
Sharmin said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has placed emphasis on extracurricular activities alongside academic studies to promote students’ mental development. She said students were being encouraged to participate in art, literature, culture and sports.
She also highlighted the government’s “Notun Kuri” initiative, saying it has expanded beyond art, literature and cultural competitions to include sports competitions across the country.
“We want students to develop physically and mentally through creative activities and healthy competition. This will help build an intelligent and talented nation,” she said.
The state minister urged teachers to play a responsible role in improving the quality of education. She called on them to refrain from private tutoring and arrange additional classes for academically weaker students.
“Teachers must be sincere in their efforts to turn our children into assets,” she said.
During her day-long visit to Lalpur, Sharmin inspected various ongoing development activities in different unions of the upazila. She also addressed a workers’ meeting of the BNP’s AB Union as the chief guest.
Former Lalpur Upazila Parishad chairman Harunar Rashid Pappu and former Gopalpur Union Parishad mayor Nazrul Islam Molam, among others, also spoke at the meeting.
