A human chain and consumers' rally were held in Narayanganj on Monday demanding the cancellation of prepaid electricity meters.

The programme was organised in front of the DPDC's Killarpul office at around 11:30am under the banner of the Narayanganj Citizens' Rights Forum.

Among those present were Bangladesh Textile Garments Workers Federation Central Committee President Advocate Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, former Narayanganj Press Club President Advocate Mahbubur Rahman Masum and other leaders. People from different wards and unions of Narayanganj city also joined the programme.

Speakers alleged that prepaid meters were being imposed on consumers without prior notice, public consultation or a public hearing.

They claimed that, under the guise of digitalisation and modernisation, the system has increased consumers' suffering through technical complications and additional financial burdens, which they said was unacceptable.

The speakers demanded an immediate halt to the installation of prepaid meters and the withdrawal of the system, warning of a larger movement if their demands are not met.

After the programme, the demonstrators submitted a memorandum to the Chief Engineer of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC).
