Writ filed seeking law to protect men from abuse

A writ petition was filed on Tuesday with the High Court seeking its directive for the enactment of a men's protection from abuse and prevention act.

Supreme Court lawyer Kazi Eliasur Rahman filed the petition with the relevant section of the High Court seeking its directive in this regard.

Ater filing the petition he told reporters that the High Court bench comprising Justice Rajik Al Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury is likely to hold hearing on the petition this week.

The respondents named in the petition are the Cabinet secretary, the principal secretary to the prime minister, the home secretary and the law secretary.

According to the petition, the introduction of such a law would help uphold equality and the interests of justice by preventing the alleged misuse of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

The petitioner asked the court to direct the respondents to enact a new law titled the "Men's Protection from Abuse and Prevention Act".

The petition further seeks a further rule asking why the respondents should not be directed to introduce the proposed legislation to protect men from alleged harassment resulting from the "misuse" of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
