A search operation is underway for 23 missing people after a Vietnamese ship carrying 62 crew members sank in the South China Sea. Chinese state media reported the information on Sunday morning.

AFP confirmed that the state television CCTV reported that the cargo vessel 'Khoi Nguyen 18' met with an accident near Yongshu Reef, also known as Fiery Cross Reef. So far, 39 people have been rescued.

According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, a Chinese rescue vessel first detected a distress signal sent by the ship shortly before 6:30PM local time on Saturday.

Xinhua reported that six Chinese vessels, a rescue helicopter, and a Vietnamese ship are currently conducting search and rescue operations in the area.

Citing authorities from China's island province of Hainan, Xinhua added that the 'Khoi Nguyen 18' is a Vietnamese-registered vessel measuring slightly less than 70 meters in length.
