Bangladesh and Hong Kong have signed an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) to strengthen bilateral investment and protect investors and capital.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday at the opening session of the 11th Belt and Road Summit 2026 in Hong Kong.
Bangladesh’s Industry, Commerce and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau signed for the Hong Kong government.
The Commerce Ministry disclosed the information in a press release on Wednesday.
The agreement is expected to strengthen protection for investors from both sides and create a more institutional investment environment, opening up new opportunities for economic cooperation.
Hong Kong is currently Bangladesh’s seventh-largest source of foreign investment. The agreement is expected to encourage further investment, particularly in the readymade garment and textile sectors and other promising areas.
Bangladesh attracted around US$750 million in foreign direct investment from Hong Kong over the past five years, including US$122 million in 2025.
Officials said the agreement would help institutionalise bilateral investment ties while strengthening economic relations and potentially reducing the trade gap between the two sides.
