1,800 saplings distributed among Kaliganj students

KALIGANJ, GAZIPUR, Aug 2: Around 1,800 fruit-bearing and timber saplings were distributed among students in Kaliganj Upazila on Sunday as part of the government's nationwide tree plantation campaign initiated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The programme was inaugurated by Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) ATM Kamrul Islam at Begum Shahida Molla Girls' High School with the support of Jamalpur Union Parishad. The event was jointly organised by Begum Shahida Molla Girls' High School, Jamalpur Siddiqia Girls' Dakhil Madrasa and Jamalpur No. 1 Government Primary School.

Saplings of mango, blackberry, jackfruit, hog plum and mahogany were distributed among students, while 15 government primary schools in the upazila also received allocations of saplings.

Besides the plantation campaign, the organisers distributed water filters, footballs and ceiling fans to the 15 primary schools to help improve the learning environment.

Speaking at the event, UNO ATM Kamrul Islam said trees play a vital role in protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for coming generations.

"Every student should plant the sapling they receive today and take responsibility for nurturing it," he said.

The programme was chaired by Jamalpur Union Parishad Chairman Khairul Alam.

Upazila Secondary Education Officer Atikur Rahman Khan and Upazila Primary Education Officer Jesmin Akter also addressed the event.

Teachers, students and guardians from different educational institutions attended the programme.

Many students pledged to care for the saplings they received, expressing hope that the initiative would help make Kaliganj greener while encouraging greater environmental awareness among the younger generation.
