Govt prioritises education in CHT: Dipen Dewan

RANGAMATI, Sept 26: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has given special allocation for improving education in the Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT), as the region lags behind other parts of the country in the sector, said former CHT minister and lawmaker Dipen Dewan.

“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has placed great emphasis on the development of education. The hilly region is far behind other areas in education. That is why the prime minister has provided a special allocation for improving education in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. We want to make proper use of the allocation,” he said.

Dewan was speaking at a scholarship distribution programme organised by the Shaheed Halim-Liaqat Smriti Sangsad in Rangamati on Saturday morning.

He alleged that previous governments had misappropriated funds allocated for education.

“We will adopt a zero-tolerance policy to prevent corruption in the development of education. There will be no compromise on this issue,” he said, assuring overall support for the education sector.

Dewan also praised the Shaheed Halim-Liaqat Smriti Sangsad for its initiative to promote creative education.

The discussion, certificate and award distribution programme was held at the auditorium of the Rangamati Shilpakala Academy.

Maulana Anwarul Mustafa Hijazi, Adviser to the Rangamati district unit of the organisation, inaugurated the programme.

Former municipal mayor Saiful Islam Chowdhury, former central chairman of the Shaheed Halim-Liaqat Smriti Sangsad Principal Md Akhtar Hossain Chowdhury, Bir Shreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Foundation Director Yasin Rana Sohel, coordinator Advocate Jamal Hossain and Rangamati Government Girls' High School Headteacher Kabir Alam, among others, addressed the programme.

The event was presided over by Hafez Tanzilur Rahman, coordinator of the Rangamati district unit, while Central Executive Director Syed Mohammad Khobaib was the chief speaker. Teachers Md Hasan and Ismail Hossain Munna moderated the programme.

More than 100 students received scholarship money, certificates and crests at the end of the programme.
