American singer, songwriter and actress Ariana Grande takes aim at her critics in the music video for “Petal”, the title track of her new album.

Shot entirely on Vista Vision, a 1950s cinematic format, the video features Grande as Pepper, an aspiring star auditioning at the fictional Fame INC. headquarters.

A panel of older male executives repeatedly criticises Pepper, initially rejecting her as “not good enough” before making remarks about her appearance, personality and authenticity.

After several unsuccessful auditions, Pepper returns with a garden chainsaw and attacks the executives, while the other women in the lobby cheer her on.

The video later reveals that the entire sequence was a performance, with Pepper having eventually become a star and playing the lead in a film.

“Petal” is the second single from Grande’s new album Petal, released Friday. It follows “Hate That I Made You Love Me”, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Grande is currently touring in support of her 2024 album Eternal Sunshine. She recently performed “Petal” live in Montreal and is scheduled to play shows in Chicago before concluding the tour with a 10-night run at London’s O2 Arena.
