The country's capital market closed lower on Monday as renewed selling pressure erased early gains, with investors remaining cautious amid persistent energy shortages and lingering geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The benchmark DSEX index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) fell 10.10 points to close at 5,886, down from 5,896 in the previous trading session.
The market opened on a positive note and briefly approached the psychological 5,900-point level. However, broad-based selling pressure intensified by mid-session, dragging the index into negative territory, according to BSS report.
Although the market attempted a modest recovery later in the day, fresh profit-taking prevented a sustained rebound, reflecting continued investor caution over the near-term market outlook.
Market turnover declined by 3.7 percent to Tk 12.1 billion, compared with Tk 12.6 billion in the previous session.
Among the major sectors, Textile accounted for the largest share of turnover with 26.2 percent, followed by Pharmaceuticals (11.8 percent) and Engineering (10.6 percent).
Sectoral performance remained mixed. Mutual Funds gained 2.1 percent, Jute rose 1.4 percent, and Information Technology advanced 0.9 percent.
On the downside, Food fell 0.8 percent, General Insurance declined 0.6 percent, and the Miscellaneous sector slipped 0.5 percent.
Meanwhile, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended lower. Its CSCX index lost 14.2 points, while the CASPI declined 30.2 points, reflecting the cautious sentiment prevailing across the country's equity market.
