That unusual premise forms the basis of 'One Night Only', a new romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck that has sparked debate over its treatment of personal freedom, government control and relationships.

Released in US theaters on August 7, the film stars Monica Barbaro as Allie and Callum Turner as Owen, two New Yorkers navigating a society where single people are permitted to have sex only on one night each year. The film combines a dystopian premise with the conventions of a romantic comedy.

A society governed by strict rules

In the world of 'One Night Only', premarital sex is prohibited for 364 days of the year. The government designates one annual 12-hour period during which the restriction is temporarily lifted.

The system is reinforced by biometric technology that monitors people's physical responses, making the unusual law part of everyday life. The concept turns what would normally be a private matter into something regulated and monitored by the state.

The annual event has also become a major social occasion. Dating apps become crowded, people make plans for the night and New York City takes on the atmosphere of a giant annual celebration.

Owen's plans fall apart

Owen, a pizza shop owner in Manhattan, initially expects to spend the night with his longtime girlfriend. However, his plans collapse when she tells him that she wants to spend the night with someone else.

Recently dumped and disappointed, Owen finds himself alone on the city's biggest dating night.

Meanwhile, Allie, an aspiring singer who earns a living recording jingles for pharmaceutical advertisements, also sees her plans fall apart. She eventually heads into the city alone, wearing an outfit chosen by a friend.

A disastrous first meeting

Owen and Allie's first encounter is far from romantic. After drinking following his breakup, Owen becomes sick in front of Allie, prompting her to walk away.

But their paths continue to cross as they move through New York during the extraordinary night. What begins as a series of awkward encounters gradually develops into a connection that neither of them had planned.

Their relationship becomes the emotional center of the film as they move around the city, discussing their ambitions, disappointments, fears and ideas about love.

Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro lead the cast

Turner and Barbaro carry the film as Owen and Allie. Turner portrays Owen as an earnest and somewhat uncomplicated young man struggling to deal with an unexpected breakup, while Barbaro plays Allie as confident, energetic and emotionally vulnerable.

Their banter and growing connection provide the film with its romantic core.

The cast also includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe, Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton. 'One Night Only' was directed and produced by Will Gluck from a script by Travis Braun.

More than a romantic comedy?

Although the film uses its unusual premise mainly to drive a romantic story, it inevitably raises questions about government control and individual freedom.

Can the state determine when people are allowed to engage in intimate relationships? What happens when personal choices become matters of law? And can a relationship built around a tightly controlled annual event become something deeper?

The film does not attempt to provide detailed political answers to these questions. Instead, it uses the dystopian setting as a backdrop for the relationship between Owen and Allie.

Critics divided over the concept

The film has received mixed reactions, with some critics arguing that its provocative premise deserved deeper political and social exploration.

The Associated Press, for example, noted that the concept could have supported sharper satire but said the movie ultimately settles into a relatively conventional romantic-comedy formula. The review praised Barbaro and Turner for providing much of the film's appeal while arguing that the screenplay does not fully exploit the potential of its premise.

Other reviews have similarly focused on the gap between the film's striking dystopian concept and its relatively light treatment of the political implications.

Despite the divided response, 'One Night Only' stands out for its unusual central idea: a society in which something as personal as intimacy has been transformed into an annual, state-sanctioned event and two strangers who discover that what they actually want may have little to do with the rules governing that night.
