Bangladesh has not yet decided whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend the BRICS Summit outreach session in New Delhi next month, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Ministry after a courtesy meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka, the foreign minister said the invitation extended to Rahman was not in his capacity as Bangladesh’s prime minister, but as the chairperson of BIMSTEC.

“The invitation was not extended to the prime minister as prime minister; it was extended to the chairperson of BIMSTEC. Please try to understand this distinction,” Khalilur Rahman said.

He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier sent a letter to Tarique Rahman, which was handed over on the day the new government was formed, inviting him to India. “There is an invitation. We will look into it,” he added.

Asked whether the issue of the prime minister’s participation in the BRICS summit was discussed on Monday, Khalilur Rahman said, “We have not taken any decision on this yet.”

The BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. India has invited Tarique Rahman to attend the outreach session as the chairperson of BIMSTEC. The invitation letter did not identify him as the prime minister of Bangladesh.

In a separate invitation, Modi also invited the head of Bangladesh’s government to visit New Delhi.
