Jamalpur drivers block road demanding gas supply

CNG-run auto-rickshaw and other vehicle drivers blocked the Jamalpur-Tangail highway in the BISIC area of Jamalpur on Thursday morning, demanding the resumption of gas supply.

The blockade began in front of Jabed Filling Station, the district’s only CNG station, causing several kilometres of traffic congestion and disrupting commuters.

The drivers said gas supply to the station had been suspended without prior notice around 10pm on Wednesday. They gathered at the station from Thursday morning and blocked the highway for about three hours.

The drivers demanded an immediate restoration of gas supply and warned of a larger movement if the crisis was not resolved.

According to Titas Gas authorities in Jamalpur, the disruption occurred because there was no gas supply in the main pipeline.

Later, Jamalpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Naznin Akhter visited the spot and spoke to the protesters. After she assured them that she would discuss the issue with higher authorities and work for a quick resolution, the drivers withdrew the blockade.

Naznin urged the drivers to submit a memorandum to the deputy commissioner and said the administration would work with higher authorities to resolve the problem.

She also said causing public suffering was undesirable and described the gas shortage as a national problem.
