Chattogram DC accused of taking Tk 27 lakh to secure AL leader’s release

A Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) deputy commissioner has been accused of taking Tk 27 lakh from the family of a banned Awami League leader to help secure his release from jail.
The accused police officer, Mohammad Amirul Islam, is the DC of CMP’s Welfare and Force branch. The political leader, Zahurul Alam Jasim, is a former councillor of Ward 9 of Chattogram City Corporation.
Jasim had been in jail for around 18 months and was granted bail in all 27 cases filed against him after his arrest in Dhaka’s Bashundhara area on March 5 last year. His family allegedly paid the money in two instalments to ensure that he would not be shown arrested in any new case after securing bail.
According to the report, Jasim’s family first paid Tk 12 lakh, with his wife Taslima Begum, brother Akbar Hossain Khokon and alleged intermediary Sonia Azad present during the transaction.
Jasim was nevertheless shown arrested in an old case filed with Kotwali Police Station. The family later allegedly paid another Tk 15 lakh after receiving assurances that he would be released.
Sonia Azad, a member of the Chattogram Metropolitan Jubo Mohila League and president of the Ward 7 West Bakalia unit, was reportedly involved in the negotiations. Her husband, Abu Naser Chowdhury Azad, had been jailed after August 5 and was reportedly held in the same room as Jasim.
Sonia denied giving money to Amirul but acknowledged helping secure her husband’s release. She said people now know how detainees are released and that she had learned how to “handle” such matters while dealing with her husband’s case.
Amirul, however, denied the allegation, saying he had personally arrested Jasim in Bashundhara and sent him to jail. He said he had neither helped secure Jasim’s release nor spoken to anyone about the matter.
The report also noted that Amirul was transferred from CMP’s North Division to the Welfare and Force branch on June 18 following allegations of assault and harassment involving journalists, a female student and cricketer Naim Hasan.
