PM apologises for load shedding, expects power situation to improve soon

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has apologised to the people for the ongoing load shedding and expressed hope that the gas crisis would ease within a few days, leading to an improvement in the country’s power situation. He made the remarks on Saturday at a doa and munajat programme and a donation distribution event for underprivileged people at T&T Ground in Dhaka’s Mohakhali, organised to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Criticising the opposition, the prime minister said demanding gas and electricity while enjoying fan air and carrying a hurricane lamp was irresponsible. He said work on LNG terminal construction had stopped during the interim government’s tenure. The present government has taken an initiative to construct the country’s third LNG terminal, but the project will take time to complete. The government is also holding discussions with China and Malaysia to address the crisis, he said.
Tarique said the government would accept any effective plan from the opposition to resolve the gas and electricity crisis within three to six months. However, if they fail to provide such a solution, they should apologise to the people for what he described as politics of misinformation and confusion.
The prime minister urged the opposition to refrain from provocative statements that could create instability in the country. Criticism is easy, he said, but serving the people requires working on the ground.
Referring to the government’s six-month tenure, Tarique said even a child takes nearly a year to learn how to walk. The government has already started implementing its electoral pledges after assuming office, he added.
Criticising the Awami League government, he alleged that mega projects had been used for “mega corruption” and that the country had been left financially depleted. He attributed the current gas and electricity crisis partly to the large debts left in the power sector. He also alleged that new gas wells were not drilled despite the country having domestic gas reserves.
Emphasising the importance of democracy and accountability, Tarique said democracy had been obstructed repeatedly since independence. He said the government would take whatever decisions were necessary for the welfare of the people and the country.
Calling for following the paths shown by Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia in building the country, the prime minister said what matters most is not what one receives personally but what one can do for the people. Bangladesh can move forward if the country’s 20 crore people can be turned into a productive workforce, he said.
The prime minister made the remarks while addressing the birth anniversary programme of Khaleda Zia in Mohakhali on Saturday.
