The motorcade of Sirajganj-3 MP Ainul Haque came under attack in Dhangara Bazar area of Raiganj upazila on Saturday evening, with several vehicles reportedly damaged.
The incident took place around 6pm. Ainul and his supporters alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami activists were behind the attack. However, local Jamaat leaders denied the allegation, claiming the incident stemmed from an internal feud within the BNP and that Jamaat was being deliberately blamed.
Speaking in a Facebook Live after the incident, Ainul alleged that a group of miscreants attacked them with the intention of killing them while they were out for public service.
His aide Foysal Biswas alleged that the attack was carried out by activists of the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and the National Citizen Party at the instigation of Jamaat.
Raiganj upazila Jamaat Ameer Ali Mortuza denied the allegations, saying the group had no involvement in the incident and condemned the attack.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Raiganj Circle) Saiful Islam Khan said Ainul was not injured, although parts of the vehicles were damaged. Police are investigating the incident, he added.
