Police have solved the brutal murder of a woman, Marina Begum, who was lured with a marriage proposal, strangled, and burned in Dhamoirhat, Naogaon. A former Union Parishad member and one other person have been arrested in connection with the crime.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday (August 20), Naogaon Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam stated that Marina's burnt body was recovered from a local mango orchard on the evening of August 18. Her son identified the body at the scene using her NID card and personal belongings found nearby.
During the investigation, police arrested the masterminds: former UP member Babul Hossain (49) and his accomplice Tareq Rahman (21). Under interrogation, they confessed that Babul had formed a relationship with Marina through selling milk. When Marina pressured him to marry her, Babul plotted to eliminate her.
According to the plan, on August 16, the suspects brought Marina to the orchard, strangled her with a belt, and set her upper body on fire using petrol to conceal her identity. Authorities are currently raiding locations to apprehend two other suspects involved in the murder.
In a separate incident detailed at the press conference, police arrested Ismail Hossain in Mahadevpur for allegedly attacking his brother-in-law, Mamunur Rashid, with a sharp weapon over an alleged breach of modesty toward Ismail's wife. Rashid later succumbed to his injuries on August 18.
Senior police officials were present at the briefing.
