7 to die for Jamalpur double murder

JAMALPUR, Aug 20: A court in Jamalpur on Thursday sentenced seven people to death and seven others to life imprisonment for the murder of an uncle and his nephew in Madarganj upazila over a Union Parishad election dispute.

Jamalpur Additional District and Sessions Judge-1 Mohammad Nezam Uddin pronounced the verdict at Thursday noon, nearly 10 years after the killings.

The death-row convicts are - Sakhawat, Sohel, Alamin, Saddam, Ujjal, Antar and Faizur.

The seven sentenced to life imprisonment are Chan Mia, Jiar, Shah Alam, Kawsar, Rifat, Sumon and Mostafa. State counsel Advocate Didarul Islam said Mohor Ali and his nephew Swapan Mia were called to Gazaria village in Madarganj on April 10, 2016, and hacked to death.

Police recovered their mutilated bodies from a jute field three days after they went missing. Mohor Ali was a Class XII student, while Swapan Mia was a Class X student.
