Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has carried out the first reshuffle of his cabinet, six months after forming the government, alongside an expansion of the Council of Ministers.

Four new ministers have joined the government, including one who was previously serving as a state minister. Two new state ministers have also been sworn in, one of whom previously served as an adviser to the prime minister.

Those sworn in as ministers are BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, Bandarban MP Saching Prue Jerry, Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andalib Rahman Partha, and Civil Aviation and Tourism State Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and Gaibandha-4 MP Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln have taken oath as state ministers.

The appointments came after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the country’s new president at Bangabhaban on Friday evening. He subsequently administered the oath to the four ministers and two state ministers.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani said the portfolios of the newly appointed ministers and state ministers had already been allocated and that gazette notifications would be issued shortly.

Who gets which ministry?

Abdul Moyeen Khan, a senior BNP leader and lawmaker from Narsingdi-2, has been given charge of the Local Government Ministry, which was previously held by Mirza Fakhrul.

Moyeen Khan previously served as information minister from 2001 to 2002 during the Khaleda Zia government.

Andalib Rahman Partha, who was elected MP from Bhola-1 in the 13th parliamentary election after contesting the polls in alliance with the BNP, has been appointed information and broadcasting minister.

Zahir Uddin Swapan, who was serving as information minister, will become an adviser to the prime minister with the status of a minister, according to the cabinet secretary.

Saching Prue Jerry, a BNP executive committee member and MP from Bandarban, has been appointed minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, a portfolio that had remained vacant for around two and a half months.

Jerry had also served as an MP in the sixth parliamentary election in 1996. He previously served as chairman of Bandarban Sadar Upazila and the Bandarban Hill District Council.

Rashiduzzaman Millat, who has been promoted from state minister to minister, will take charge of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

The current civil aviation and tourism minister, Afroza Khanam Rita, has been appointed food minister.

Newly appointed State Minister Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln has been given charge of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad is serving as the minister for the ministry.

Humayun Kabir, who had been serving as the prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser with the status of a state minister, has now been appointed state minister for foreign affairs.

Shama Obaed Islam is currently serving as state minister for foreign affairs. Asked about having two state ministers in the same ministry, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani said, “There is no problem if there are two state ministers in one ministry.”
