Transparency saves Tk 1.36 cr in Dumuria project

The local administration has set an example of transparency in a canal re-excavation project taken to resolve water-logging in Dumuria Upazila of Khulna.

Strict supervision and verification saved an unspent amount of Tk 1,36,31,019, which has been returned to the state treasury. Locals termed this a major achievement of administrative good governance and public interest protection.

Local sources said the project was initiated to re-excavate the canal from Sahas Doldanga to the Bhadra River via Kathbunia Bara Doania, alongside another key adjacent canal, to alleviate long-standing waterlogging in Bildakatiya and adjoining areas.

During physical inspections, the administration determined the actual volume of work completed. Instead of withdrawing the full estimated budget, payments were cleared only for the executed work, saving a large amount of public money.

For the Sahas Doldanga to Bhadra River project, the estimated cost was Tk 1,28,78,537. However, proper evaluation capped actual expenditure at Tk 90,54,361, returning Tk 37,24,176 to the treasury.

Similarly, the Krishnanagar Nimtala to Rangpur Saratala project had an estimated cost of Tk 1,80,28,232. Actual work cost Tk 82,21,574, leaving an unspent Tk 98,60,658 to be safely deposited back to the state.

Expressing satisfaction over the timely move, Dumuria Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md Arif Hossain confirmed that the unspent Tk 1.36 crore was deposited with full transparency.

Dumuria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sabita Sarkar confirmed the return of the funds. She stated that the local administration remains committed to preventing the misuse of public funds and safeguarding public interest.
