Air tank explosion injures two in Mirsarai

Two people were injured after a 2,000-litre vulcanising air tank exploded with a loud bang at Bartakia Bazar in Mirsarai, Chattogram, on Tuesday morning.

The injured were identified as Yunus, 35, and garage owner Imon Hossain. Yunus was seriously injured in the incident, while a nearby shop and the garage were also damaged.

The explosion occurred around 9:30 AM near the entrance to the Mirsarai Economic Zone.

Locals said the tank was being filled with air using a machine when it suddenly exploded. The tank was reportedly thrown about 50 feet into the air before falling to the ground and splitting into two.

The blast damaged equipment and goods at the garage and a nearby shop. The sound and vibration were felt within about a kilometre of the site, causing panic among local residents.

Yunus, son of the late Ruhul Amin of West Polmogra village in Mirsarai, was taken to Bartakia Radiance Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in critical condition.

Local businessman Alamgir Hossain said he had just opened his shop when the explosion occurred. He said the blast caused a powerful gust of air that scattered goods inside his shop.

Duty doctor Kamrul Hasan said Yunus was admitted to the hospital after receiving injuries to various parts of his body, with his eyes and face suffering the most serious injuries.

Mirsarai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Farida Yasmin said a police team was sent to the scene after receiving information about the explosion. She confirmed that one person had been seriously injured.
