Ministers ask BTV to reduce their appearances

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman and State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury have asked Bangladesh Television (BTV) to reduce their appearances on its broadcasts and instructed state-run television channels to give opposition parties proportional coverage.
Andalib made the remarks at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday on the progress of various government activities.
He said his and the state minister’s first request during recent discussions with BTV was to show their images as little as possible.
“Because of longstanding practices, even this is proving difficult to change. This is how the system has traditionally worked,” he said.
State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury said BTV, Sangsad Television and other state-run television channels would not only broadcast news about government MPs and ministers.
“News about opposition lawmakers and opposition parties outside parliament must also be covered proportionately,” he said.
He said the channels should highlight what opposition representatives say, whether in support of or against the government, particularly issues concerning the people.
“That is democracy,” he said.
The state minister said the government had taken a decision in this regard and instructed the relevant authorities to implement it from Tuesday.
Asked about bringing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back from India, Andalib said Bangladesh wanted to bring back not only one person but everyone facing cases or allegations in connection with various incidents and ensure they face trial.
He said those accused should face proper justice for the July movement and earlier incidents as well.
Asked about the possibility of pursuing the matter through Indian courts, the minister said such reports were “not very favourable” for Bangladesh, adding that the government’s position remained unchanged.
“Those facing cases and those who need to be brought to justice should be returned to Bangladesh and tried under the law,” he said.
