12 fishermen rescued after fishing boat drifts in sea

The Coast Guard has rescued 12 fishermen alive along with a fishing boat after its engine broke down and the vessel drifted in the deep sea.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon disclosed the information on Tuesday (August 25) afternoon.

He said that at around 8:00 PM on Sunday (August 23), the fishing boat FV Mayer Doya developed an engine failure while fishing in the deep sea, 12 nautical miles south of Dublar Char in the Sundarbans, leaving 12 fishermen stranded.

After the boat came within mobile network coverage, one of the fishermen called the boat owner at around 6:30 PM on Monday (August 24) and informed him of the situation. The owner then contacted the Coast Guard's emergency service number 16111 and sought assistance.

Acting on the information, Coast Guard Station Dublar immediately launched a rescue operation and rescued all 12 fishermen alive along with the disabled boat from the deep-sea area.

The rescued fishermen were provided with first aid and necessary food. The process of handing them and the boat over to the owners is underway, the Coast Guard said.

He further said, "the Coast Guard will continue such rescue operations in the future to respond to emergencies at sea."
