Five leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP) at district level have been arrested from Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar over allegations of attempted abduction and attack on a former leader of the party.
This happened around 9:00 PM yesterday (August 27) in Bichrakandi locality of Kulaura municipality.
Former joint coordinator of the NCP Tamim Ahmed submitted a written complaint identifying 10 persons as the accused, where district senior joint convener Ehsan Zakaria is the principal accused. Besides, 10 to 15 unidentified persons were also named as the accused.
According to police source, SI of Kulaura Police Station Farhad Matbar said Ehsan Zakaria, Md Tofayel Ahmed, Sahel Ahmed, Fahim Ahmed Jony and Sohag Mia were arrested from the spot.
The complainant said the accused demanded Tk 500,000 from Tamim to include his name in the district committee and threatened him of death as he did not agree.
Accused people intercepted Tamim and his companions on their way from Moulvibazar to Barlekha and made an attempt to take him away, however when his companions tried to stop the accused people, they attacked them with sharp weapons, injuring seven people including Tamim.
The five arrested persons were taken to the court today morning, police said.
