JU playground renovation continues despite administrative suspension

Renovation work on the playground adjacent to ‘Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore’ Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU) continued on Friday despite an administrative order suspending the project.
The Hall Union’s Vice President (VP) Amit Banik reportedly instructed the contractor to continue the work, while General Secretary (GS) Mahmudul Hasan Emon could not be reached for comment.
The university administration issued the suspension order on Thursday following allegations that the renovation project was awarded to an unlicensed contractor without inviting a tender, in violation of the Public Procurement Rules (PPR).
According to a press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office, the administration formed a four-member investigation committee headed by Prof Dr Mahbub Kabir to investigate the allegations. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days.
However, a visit to the playground on Friday afternoon found renovation work continuing despite the suspension order.
A bulldozer was seen levelling the ground, while a tractor transported and dumped soil on the playground. Several workers were also seen moving soil with spades and baskets.
Prof Dr Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, provost of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall, said he had instructed the contractor to stop the work and remove the equipment after receiving the administration’s notice.
“After receiving the university administration’s notice yesterday, I instructed the contractor to stop the work and remove the equipment. I am not aware of the work continuing. If students have pressured the contractor to continue the work, I will know after visiting the hall,” he added.
However, Hall Union VP Amit Banik defended the continuation of the work, saying the students wanted the renovation to continue.
“The students of the hall want the renovation work to continue. That is why the work is continuing. The administration cannot stop the renovation without a valid reason,” he added.
Several attempts were made to contact Hall Union GS Mahmudul Hasan Emon for his comment, but his mobile phone was found switched off.
Asked about the continuation of the work despite the suspension order, JU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said the project would remain suspended until the investigation was completed.
“The work will remain temporarily suspended during the investigation. After the investigation, the work will be completed quickly. Those responsible for any irregularities must be identified and brought under accountability. That is the final decision,” he added.
The university allocated Tk 7.31 lakh for the renovation of the unfinished playground adjacent to Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall.
